Your guide on things to eat and drink in August across Chicago: breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, cocktails, craft beer and more.
1. Mac & Cheese & Mac & Cheese
On Wednesday August 27th, Old Town Pour House is hosting a ‘Masters of Mac’ mac’n’cheese cook off, featuring four Chicago chefs contributing to one masterful Mac & Cheese flight. Bub City‘s Chef Doug Psaltis (Baby Back Mac), SideDoor‘s Chef Vic Newgren (Cavatappi Mac ‘N’ Cheese), Three Aces‘ Chef Matt Troost (Pulled Porchetta Mac ‘N’ Cheese) and Old Town Pour House’s Chef John Madden (Baked Truffle Mac ‘N’ Cheese) will all compete for the title. Guests can order the flight between 5pm and 8pm and vote for their favorites, and can also order the accompanying beer flight, for a sample size beer pairing for each of the recipes.
2. Southern Fried Chicken Livers
What?! Yes, chicken livers. A delicate pate-like texture, they are a classic feature in Europe that have been given a new lease of life by Chef Tim Benedict at Old Town Pour House Oak Brook. With a Southern Fried batter and a side of buffalo dipping sauce, this may be the best $7 you will ever adventure with.
3. Mules n Geese
For a limited time only, Old Town Pour House Chicago will be featuring a new cocktail; Mules n Geese. Grey Goose Vodka la poire (pear), Lime juice, Ginger beer, Soda, Lemon garnish. A refreshing spin on a Moscow Mule!
4. Waldorf Salad
Our favorite spot for lunch in the loop, Sweetwater‘s menu has a number of great salad options, and our favorite for this hot and hectic month is the Waldorf Salad, with grilled chicken, baby spinach, beets, candied walnuts, cucumber, apple, dried cranberries, gorgonzola, and an apple cider vinaigrette.
5. Shark Infested Waters
Wicker Park’s best neighborhood bar, The Boundary often have fun and unique cocktails throughout the year. August sees the return of a popular favorite during Shark Week (Aug 8th-17th). Their Shark Infested Waters is available all throughout Shark Week, and is made with their house-infused kiwi and blueberry vodka. Served with a side of SHARK!
Enjoy!
